Writing from the Heart: Kokyo and Wa
During one of our recent calligraphy experiences, we welcomed a lovely couple who each chose a word close to their heart — “Kokyo” (故郷), meaning hometown, and “Wa” (和), meaning harmony.
As they began to write, their brush movements were incredibly careful, as if every single bristle were under perfect control. Watching them work in quiet concentration was truly pleasant and calming.
The word 故郷 (Kokyo) is filled with memories, roots, and a deep sense of belonging. Her calligraphy was especially beautiful, with confident yet gentle strokes that reflected sincerity and care. The other word, 和 (Wa), represents balance, peace, and the spirit of Japan. His writing was equally thoughtful and expressive, capturing the calm strength of the character.
Seeing them sit side by side, quietly focused on their brushes, was a wonderful reminder of how calligraphy can become a shared moment — calm, enjoyable, and deeply meaningful.
Our calligraphy and tea ceremony experiences take place in a real Japanese home in Ikenoue, a quiet neighborhood just minutes from Shibuya. Here, guests can slow down and experience Japanese culture in a warm, everyday setting. Moments like this are what make our space so special, and we are always grateful to share them.
