The Beauty of Sound – 音
Thank you for joining us for a calm and creative afternoon of Japanese calligraphy and matcha!
It was such a pleasure to see you enjoy both the delicious soy milk matcha latte and the meditative process of writing with brush and ink.
The kanji you chose, 「音」, means “sound” or “music.” In Japanese culture, sound is never just noise — we cherish the elegant sounds of rain and wind, the crunch of footsteps on gravel, and even the chirping of insects.
On hot summer days, people decorate their homes with wind chimes called fūrin (風鈴). These small bells, often shaped like miniature temple bells or upside-down glass cups, make soothing sounds when stirred by the breeze. Just hearing them can bring a feeling of coolness — as if sound itself could soften the heat.
Unlike writing with a pen, using a brush and ink requires remarkable concentrations. You naturally face the paper and enter a state of silence. It is because of the silence that you can enjoy the sound. The sounds such as conversations, music, and the sounds of nature can be more precious after silence.
It was a joy to spend time with you and share great conversation. We hope to welcome you back again soon for another peaceful moment.
