December Hustle

December in Japan is known as “Shiwasu”, a term that perfectly captures the month’s busy atmosphere. The word “Shiwasu” literally means “buddhist monks running,” evoking the image of even the most composed and revered individuals bustling around to meet the demands of the season. For many years, I believed the “shi” in “Shiwasu” referred specifically to teachers, imagining that even esteemed educators were swept up in the year’s end frenzy.

Indeed, December is a whirlwind of activity in Japan. From year-end tax adjustments and inventory counts to financial closing, a thorough cleaning, and preparations for the New Year, it’s a month that keeps everyone busy.

Yet amidst the busyness, there is also an air of anticipation and joy. Children’s report cards from school, the promise of year-end bonuses, festive Christmas feasts, and the serene tradition of welcoming the New Year with family makes the effort worthwhile.

So, let’s push through the busyness of “Shiwasu” with a smile, knowing that brighter days are just around the corner!
