Before we knew it, we realized that our guest had been practicing calligraphy for over 50 years. She found a phrase in the newspaper and carefully wrote it out with delicate strokes using the tip of a fine brush. It was as if they were writing with just a single strand of the brush’s bristles—such accuracy and finesse!

While I admired the softness of kana characters, the guest mentioned that she had mainly practiced kanji throughout their calligraphy journey and found kana to be challenging. Simply transforming printed newspaper text into handwritten characters made the words feel more alive, imbued with the warmth of human touch.
