A Powerful Presence
On the same day, another senior from my university days also came to visit, accompanying my former professor. He works with incense and calligraphy brushes as part of his profession, so his relationship with these traditional tools runs deep.
During his visit to my salon, he chose to write the character “Ryu” (龍) — dragon. His brushstrokes were bold and confident, with both strength and delicacy clearly visible. Each line felt intentional, filling the space with a powerful, dynamic presence.
The dragon is widely worshipped as a legendary creature that controls water. Watching him write, I sensed the quiet power and litheness of this sacred animal.
Our calligraphy and tea ceremony experiences take place in a traditional Japanese home in Ikenoue, a peaceful area only four minutes by local train from Shibuya. Away from the noise of the city, this is a place to pause, reflect, and enjoy a moment of quiet connection.
