New Year Calligraphy Event

We are happy to share the details of our upcoming New Year Calligraphy event! While it’s still November, you might think it’s too early to plan for next year—but think again!

In Japan, the transition from Christmas to New Year is remarkably swift. If you visit stores now, you’ll notice they sell Christmas and New Year’s ornaments side by side. By the time December 26th arrives, the glittering Christmas lights are replaced overnight with elegant decorations that herald the arrival of the Japanese New Year.

New Year’s in Japan is a time for family reunions, much like Thanksgiving in the United States. It’s a cherished occasion when loved ones come together and share traditional dishes. It’s also a moment to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the one ahead.

In 2025 why not make your New Year celebration even more meaningful by participating in our calligraphy event? Together with your family, you can craft beautiful “kakizome” (first calligraphy of the year), writing down your aspirations, dreams, or goals for the new year. We’ll provide decorative boards so you can proudly display your creation at home, serving as a reminder of your resolutions throughout the year.

A Cultural Note: “Oni Laugh When You Talk About the Future”
Have you heard the Japanese proverb, “If you talk about next year, even the oni (demons) will laugh”? It reflects the idea that the future is unpredictable, even as near as tomorrow. Perhaps the oni live in the moment, treasuring each day as it comes. While this proverb may encourage us to focus on the present, planning for a bright future can bring joy and hope—and what better way to do that than with the timeless art of calligraphy?

Join us for this traditional and heartfelt event, and start your New Year with creativity!
