Seasonal Shodo Moment: The Kanji 草 (Kusa / So)

In Japanese, many kanji characters carry layers of meaning.
The character 草, pronounced kusa or so, means grass, but it can also represent simplicity, speed, a rough draft, or the beginning of something new.

Grass grows faster than trees, and in early spring the first green shoots appear under the warm sunlight. This image of fresh grass often symbolizes the quiet arrival of spring and new beginnings.

The structure of the kanji is also interesting.
草 combines the “kusa” radical (艹) — commonly used in kanji related to plants — with the character 早, which means early or quick. There are many plant-related kanji and it is enjoyable to practice them in shodo (Japanese calligraphy).

Practicing seasonal kanji like 草 is a beautiful way to connect language, nature, and traditional art.
