Beginning of Snow
Today marks “Shou-setsu” in the Japanese calendar. This term translates to “a time when light snow begins to fall.” However, here in Tokyo, snowfall is rare even in midwinter. Tokyo’s annual average temperature is around 17°C (63°F), similar to Atlanta in America. While Tokyo’s summer is known for its hot and humid weather, the upcoming winter season will be dry and cold.
Japan spans about 3,000 km (1,860 miles) from north to south, resulting in diverse climates. For instance, Sapporo in the northern city has an average annual temperature of about 10°C (50°F), comparable to Berlin, Germany. On the other hand, Naha in the southern city averages around 23°C (73°F), similar to Monterrey, Mexico. Japan’s geography ranges from subarctic in the north to subtropical in the south.
In Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost region, the first snow of the season was reported in late October. As the season progresses, mountainous areas and regions famous for heavy snowfall will enter the peak of their snowy season.
