We only got to try the final steps of the process.

The brush we were given already had its handle and brush tip attached. It looked pretty much ready to sell. I thought, “Isn’t this good enough already?”

But no! There were still two more steps to complete before it was ready to use.

We had a private lesson, just the two of us, taught by someone introduced to us as the chairman. I should have asked exactly which organization he chaired. Later, when I looked back at our photos, I noticed a name displayed there: Yasuhiro Sanemori, a Traditional Craftsman.

I looked him up online and discovered that he was one of just 11 craftsmen recognized as masters among the approximately 1,500 brush makers in Kumano!

His professional name is Tokuzen. Could he possibly be the chairman of the Kumano Brush Traditional Craftsmen’s Association?

Yes, that was him!

Meet Traditional Craftsman Tokuzen Sanemori

Apparently, Tokuzen-san doesn’t teach every workshop, so we were very lucky to learn from someone so highly skilled.

Step 1: Combing the Brush

Our first task was to comb the brush hairs with a metal comb.

“But why would we pull out all those lovely hairs?”

As it turns out, any hairs that come out during this process are ones that would eventually fall out during use anyway. If left in the brush, they would only get in the way.

So, for the final finishing process, we had to comb the brush firmly and remove all those unwanted hairs.

While I was carefully and nervously running the comb through the hairs, Tokuzen-san showed us how it was done. With a steady rhythm, he quickly removed one loose hair after another.

“Oh, so I can be a little more forceful than I thought!”

Encouraged by his example, I ran the comb through the hairs with much more confidence.

I wasn’t sure how long I should continue, so I asked Tokuzen-san to check my work. Once he gave me the go-ahead, it was time for the next step.

Step 2: Gluing the Brush Hairs Together

The next step was to apply glue.

We filled a small dish with plenty of starch glue and dipped the brush tip into it.

And then came another surprising technique!

We had to press the brush tip against the bottom of the dish, pushing the hairs open in all directions, and rotate the handle in circles.

“Wait, is this really OK?!”

Tokuzen-san pressed and twisted the base of the brush hairs with such force that I was sure we were going to ruin the brush.

“I’m going to split the brush apart!” I thought in a panic.

But Tokuzen-san calmly explained, “You have to do this to get the glue all the way inside and wash out any loose hairs trapped within the brush.”

Part of me still thought, “Wouldn’t it be better to take the brush home just as it was, all nice and fluffy?”

A little reluctantly, I followed his instructions and kept working the brush around in the glue.

Thinking about it, this made sense. When you buy a new calligraphy brush, the hairs are firmly held together with glue. Loosening them before the first use can take quite a bit of effort.

Still, I had no idea how much twisting was enough to make sure the glue had reached the inside of the brush. So, once again, I asked Tokuzen-san to check my work.

Step 3: Shaping the Brush Tip

Once he gave us the OK, it was time to use something that had caught my attention from the beginning: a pole with a long piece of thread attached to it.

A sturdy pole stood on the table, with a thread tied near the top. The thread was so long that it still reached well beyond the tabletop.

Now I understood what it was for!

Using the thread, we had to remove the excess glue and shape the brush tip neatly.

First, we positioned the brush near the top of the thread and wrapped the thread around the base of the brush hairs.

Then, holding the handle in one hand, we used the other to control the tension of the thread. As we slowly rotated the handle, we guided the thread down toward the tip of the brush.

The thread squeezed out the excess glue and brought the hairs together into a beautifully neat shape.

But there was still one problem.

How much glue should we remove?

Neither my son nor I got it quite right. We squeezed out too much glue, which meant we had to go all the way back to the previous step and dip the brush into the glue again.

We just couldn’t get the hang of it!

With Tokuzen-san’s help, however, we eventually managed to shape our brushes beautifully.

Once the brushes were dry, their tips would hold their shape, making them easy to carry home.

Since drying takes several days, we were given caps to cover the brush tips, and off we went to the next destination on our trip.

Three Months Later…

It’s been three months since our workshop, and my son still hasn’t used the brush he made.

I, on the other hand, followed the instructions and let mine dry after returning home. But I was so curious to try it that I couldn’t resist using it as soon as I could.

Somehow, I feel as though I can write more beautiful characters with this brush.

Hehe!

Perhaps it’s because I know how much work went into making it. Or perhaps it’s simply the joy of using something I made with my own hands.

Either way, I’m happy with my new brush.

Would You Like to Visit Kumano?

Kumano Town is famous throughout Japan for its calligraphy brushes. Hiroshima Station is just under four hours from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen, and from Hiroshima, you can reach Kumano Town in about 40 minutes by car.

If you ever have the chance to visit Hiroshima, why not try making your own calligraphy brush?

And if you’d like to experience Japanese calligraphy in Tokyo, come and visit Oh! Mama, my small traditional Japanese house in Ikenoue, just four minutes by local train from Shibuya.

I’d love to welcome you and share the pleasure of writing Japanese characters with you!

.wp-block-kadence-advancedbtn.kb-btns6287_7ec990-2f{gap:var(--global-kb-gap-xs, 0.5rem
