It celebrates the romantic story of two celestial lovers: Orihime, the weaving princess represented by the star Vega in the constellation Lyra, and Hikoboshi, the cowherd represented by the star Altair in the constellation Aquila. In their fateful story, they are separated by the Milky Way and can only meet once a year on this special night.

On this day, children—and of course adults too—write their wishes on colorful paper strips called tanzaku and hang them on sasa bamboo branches. Then, they make a wish upon the stars.

Unfortunately, in Tokyo, Tanabata falls during the rainy season, and the stars are rarely visible.
