Two wonderful guests recently visited us and took part in our Japanese calligraphy experience.
We asked them to try something deceptively simple: drawing a circle with a brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first glance, it might seem easy \u2014 just a circle. But drawing a smooth, balanced circle with a brush requires surprising skill and concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You may have seen calligraphy scrolls displaying a circle \u2014 known as ens\u014d (\u5186\u76f8) \u2014 hanging in a traditional Japanese tokonoma alcove. In the world of tea ceremony, calligraphy by monks who have undergone spiritual training is highly valued. Their works reflect not just technique, but a worldview shaped by self-discipline and kindness to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The circle, drawn with one continuous stroke, is said to symbolize many things: the universe, emptiness, or the buddhist teachings.
When people see an ens\u014d, they might think, \u201cI could draw that too.\u201d But it is simple enough to attempt, yet it has profound meanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To me, the circle suggests reincarnation and even a life of just one. Life flows continuously \u2014 past, present, and future are all connected. Sometimes, I look back and think, \u201cI should\u2019ve studied harder when I had the chance.\u201d But reflecting on the past helps me live the present more mindfully and move forward with purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s amazing how one circle can inspire so many thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
