What Is Ikebana<\/em>?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ikebana<\/em> is the traditional Japanese art of arranging flowers and plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Western flower arrangements, which often emphasize volume and visual abundance, ikebana<\/em> places importance on space, simplicity, and the individual beauty of each plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every branch has its own natural direction.
Every flower has its own expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than simply filling an empty space, ikebana<\/em> brings the space itself to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beauty exists not only in the flowers themselves, but also in the \u201cinvisible space\u201d between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this experience, you will be introduced to Tatehana<\/em><\/strong>, one of the oldest forms of ikebana<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originating over 550 years ago during the Muromachi period, Tatehana<\/em> is considered one of the foundations from which later styles of ikebana<\/em> developed, including the formal Rikka<\/em><\/strong> style of the Ikenobo school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tradition began with the offering of flowers to Buddhas and Shinto deities and eventually developed into one of Japan\u2019s most refined art forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ikebana<\/em> is not simply about arranging flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is about learning to observe nature, appreciate it, and engage in a quiet dialogue with it.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Experience<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

First, your instructor will introduce the history and philosophy of Tatehana<\/em>, followed by careful guidance through its fundamental principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Tatehana<\/em> composition consists mainly of three elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shin (Motoki):<\/strong> the principal plant or branch
Shitakusa:<\/strong> plants that accent and support the base of the arrangement
Soe:<\/strong> plants that complement the principal plant and Shitakusa<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step is to choose the plant that will become the Shin<\/strong>, the principal element.<\/p>\n\n\n

Which branch feels alive?
Which direction brings out the natural beauty of the branch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This quiet decision becomes the foundation of the entire composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you work, you will occasionally step back and view your arrangement from different angles. Through this process, you may discover that ikebana<\/em> teaches not only composition, but also perspective\u2014the way we look at things\u2014and a sense of depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No previous experience is necessary. The lesson is designed to be calm, welcoming, and enjoyable, even for complete beginners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
