What Is Interior Sho?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Interior Sho is a modern style of Japanese calligraphy created to harmonize with today\u2019s interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While traditional calligraphy was often displayed in formal tatami rooms, contemporary Japanese homes are largely Western-style spaces \u2014 bright, minimal, and open. Interior Sho reimagines classical brushwork for any interior style all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The focus is not only on writing characters beautifully, but on composition, balance, and the intentional use of white space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eri spent part of her childhood in the United States. When she returned to Japan, she did not yet fully understand the language. The kanji surrounding her felt distant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Yet one memory remained vivid \u2014 the scent of ink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Before she understood their meaning, she felt the beauty of the characters. As a child, she traced faint kanji through the back of advertisement paper at her grandmother\u2019s house, captivated by their form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Because she once struggled with language herself, Eri understands the quiet vulnerability of holding a brush for the first time. What begins with tension gradually softens into calm concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She has studied calligraphy for over 20 years under Master Kei Shimizu, refining her sensitivity to line strength, composition, and the beauty of negative space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Her work includes store signage and solo exhibitions. Today, she creates seasonal one- or two-character works designed for modern interiors and shares her approach through intimate workshops in a traditional Japanese home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For Eri, calligraphy is not about writing words.
    It is about creating space where the heart can breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
